The California ISO Department of Market Monitoring (DMM) has published the 2022 Q3 Market Issues and Performance Report, and has scheduled a stakeholder call on Dec. 20, 2022, to discuss reported analysis and findings.
The report covers market results for the period including a prolonged heat event in early September 2022, resulting in demand for electricity well in excess of current resource planning targets, reaching a record high in the CAISO and Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM) market footprint. Although several areas called for the highest level of emergency alert, no area curtailed load to maintain reliability. This quarterly report includes analysis of this event based on DMM’s independent review.
Market prices were significantly higher than the same quarter of 2021. Day-ahead prices rose more than 55 percent, on average. Natural gas prices increased across the West and in the California spot market, driving electricity prices up as did weather event driven load.
Information related to market monitoring is available on the Market Monitoring webpage.
